Hans returns to his mother after seven years of honest work with a large lump of gold as a reward from his master. On his journey, Hans exchanges the gold for a horse, the horse for a cow, and so on. This amazes the pretty daughter of a businessman, Elisabeth, whose father always looks for the best business. Nevertheless, Elisabeth falls in love with the unusual Hans, who ends up standing in front of her without any possessions.
